CHAPTER 10

The drive to Niall’s parents’ home took almost an hour, but Toni didn’t mind. It gave her time to settle herself, to prepare for meeting a lot of strangers who only knew that Niall was seeing her. Despite his reassurances, she couldn’t help but fret about his family’s reception. She was thankful that Niall didn’t try to fill the silence with conversation, instead tuning the car radio to a classical music channel. The music was soothing and beautiful.

She let her mind wander as they zipped along the motorway, inevitably landing on the news Niall had given her when he’d come over to see her on Wednesday evening after work. He had brought dinner, and after they’d eaten and cleaned up, he had led her into the living room and told her that Randy was back.

She shook her head. Today was not the day to worry about that. Niall had told her she was safe, and he and his team were all ex-military men who knew how to protect themselves. She was going to enjoy the time she spent with him today and not worry about things she had no control over anyway. She had better things to fret about—how ironic was that!—like whether or not his parents would like or approve of her. She would figure out what to do another day.

“I can feel you worrying.”

They had stopped at Sainsbury’s and Niall had just got back into the car with the ice cream. He reached out and pulled her hand over his thigh, squeezing it comfortingly. “What can I do to help you relax?”

The thought that popped into her mind immediately was so X-rated that Toni gasped, causing Niall to glance at her.

“What?”

She didn’t answer him immediately. What was she going to say? A hard ride would do the trick? She would absolutely not think about riding Niall, not now, minutes away from his family home. She didn’t need to show up aroused with no chance of relieving the sexual tension.

“Nothing. Just an errant thought.”

Niall’s chuckle made her skin heat up with awareness. “Errant, huh? What if we could run with it?”

Trust him to know exactly where her mind had gone! “There’ll be none of that, thank you very much. I don’t need to be distracted by your… by anything you may be thinking of doing. So, stop it, please.”

She pulled her hand away to prevent him from trying to follow through on his question but realized that she wasn’t as nervous as she’d been a moment ago, that in fact, she was relaxed.

“You’re pretty sneaky, aren’t you?” she asked with a smile as he turned onto a long driveway between two stately gates that swung open at a touch from the remote control above his visor.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he quipped, but the grin on his face gave away the lie in that pronouncement.

“Of course you don’t,” she replied, shaking her head at his teasing. “Thank you, anyway.”

He glanced at her again as he drove around to the side of the rather imposing house that appeared after a few hundred yards.
